You must have read Imran Gowhar's report in today's MiD DAY about how Karnataka has just one policeman who can defuse bombs.
It is a shame that our law enforcers are so primitive in their methods. They are inadequately equipped and they don't learn. Most constables are crude and literal minded, and are cleverest when they scent an opportunity to pocket some loose change... It is not as if the force has no smart, upright people, but they work in a challenged (ah, political correctness!) environment.
We wrote about the commando who went and defused a bomb near Forum Mall. He is a hero, no doubt, but he is a foolish hero. He wore no mask, no gloves, nothing... And after he had done his job, he posed for media cameras like a movie star.
But what if the bomb had blown off while he was at it? Like M C Sharma, the brave policeman who died in Delhi, he would have left behind a grieving family. Inspired bloggers would have talked about his sacrifice. Karnataka would have lost the only man who knew how to defuse bombs. And the terrorists would have had the last laugh.
